Trey Lance Rumors Denied by Lions GM; Says He Didn't Call 49ers Before Cowboys Trade

Reports that the Detroit Lions talked to the San Francisco 49ers about trading for quarterback Trey Lance have been rejected by the team's general manager, Brad Holmes.

I never reached out about Trey Lance in particular. Holmes told reporters on Friday, "I never asked about the player or anything else.

I think the report said that our team and a few others were interested in that group. But I never went after the guy myself. I can't say if the news is true or not.

Dianna Russini of The Athletic reported on Tuesday that the Lions were one of the teams that had shown interest in getting Lance.

In Russini's story, the Buffalo Bills and Baltimore Ravens were also named as teams that were interested in Lance.

This summer, the 49ers put Lance up for sale after Brock Purdy, a seventh-round pick in 2022, was named the starting quarterback, and Sam Darnold, a second-round pick in 2018, won the backup job during training camp.

After hurting his ankle and missing most of the 2022 season, Lance wasn't expected to beat out Purdy for the starting quarterback job in 2023.
