Easy Sweet Potato Casserole Recipe

On Thanksgiving, sweet potato casserole is a traditional American side dish. The essential components generally comprise:

Sweet potatoes: The foundation is composed of mashed sweet potatoes that have been roasted or boiled.

Butter: To enhance the richness and creaminess of the pureed sweet potatoes, a substantial amount of butter is incorporated.

Sugar: To sweeten the potatoes, sugar, brown sugar, or maple syrup is added.

Eggs and milk: Eggs and milk contribute to the casserole’s moisture and aid in its binding.

Spices: Common spices consist of vanilla, cinnamon, nutmeg, and ginger. The sweet potatoes are complemented by these warm seasonings.

Topping: After baking the sweet potato mixture until hot and bubbly, top it with ingredients such as toasted hazelnuts or marshmallows. Additionally, certain recipes call for an oat or buttery streusel or garnish.

Here is a classic sweet potato casserole recipe:

Ingredients:

  • 3 pounds sweet potatoes, peeled, chopped
  • 8 tablespoons melted butter
  • 1⁄2 cup milk
  • 2 large eggs, beaten
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1⁄4 cup light brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1⁄2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1⁄4 teaspoon freshly grated nutmeg
  • 1⁄4 teaspoon ground ginger
  • 1⁄2 cup chopped toasted pecans
  • mini marshmallows (optional topping)

Steps:

Place the chopped sweet potatoes in a pot, cover with water, and bring to a boil over high heat. Reduce heat to medium-low and simmer until fork tender, about 15 minutes. Drain then transfer to a large bowl. Mash the sweet potatoes well with a potato masher.

Preheat the oven to 350°F. Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish and set aside.

Stir the melted butter into the mashed sweet potatoes until fully incorporated. Next add the milk, eggs, sugars, vanilla, cinnamon, nutmeg, and ginger. Blend thoroughly until smooth.

Pour the sweet potato mixture into the prepared baking dish. Sprinkle the chopped toasted pecans evenly over the top. For extra decadence, you can also layer mini marshmallows on top (optional).

Bake for 30 minutes until heated through and lightly browned around the edges. Let cool for at least 15 minutes before slicing and serving.

This cinnamon-spiced sweet potato casserole makes a perfect Thanksgiving side. Adjust spices to taste. Enjoy!
